Speaker Purpose Audience Context Exigence

For my honors project, I prepared and taught lessons for adult language learners for the Level 1–2 English Class at Memorial Lutheran Church in Ames, IA. I initially intended to develop materials, such as flashcards and games, to be used along with my lessons to teach English to adult language learners; after teaching a few class sessions, though, I shifted my focus. I realized that developing effective teaching strategies was more important for the students I had than creating materials. As I continued to teach, a strategy I found effective was to prepare lessons with activities that could be adjusted based on the number of students present (I rarely had the same combination of students present in my classroom). I also discovered that including simplified activities in my lesson was important because I often had new students join my class partway through a session. The outcomes for my project may have differed from my initial intentions, but I still had a positive experience and was able to develop useful teaching strategies through practice and reflection. I also learned an important lesson: thinking on one’s feet and being flexible in the classroom are vital to the success of a classroom teacher.
