Blood Red: Liverpool's potential UEFA Champions League last-16 opponents

That night at a snow-swept Olympiskiy Stadium as I watched a drab Champions League game between Shakhtar Donetsk and Lyon, the perishing cold didn’t bother me at all.” Words by Robert O’Connor, whose first book Blood and Circuses: A Football Journey Through Europe’s Rebel Republics is out now on Biteback Publishing. In an hour, FC Viktoria Pilsen will play Shakhtar Donetsk which seems to be a relaxed, productive, industrial city in Eastern Ukraine. Their soccer team is much richer than ours – after all, Donetsk is a 1-million-people city, Pilsen has just 170,000. The Champions League draw takes place on Monday, with Liverpool one of the 16 sides awaiting their fate after qualifying from the group stages.

Jurgen Klopp’s side finished their Group D campaign with a 1-1 draw against Midtjylland on Wednesday as Mohamed Salah made history.

Salah opened the scoring after just 55 seconds in Denmark becoming Liverpool’s fastest ever goalscorer in the Champions League, while his 22nd strike in the competition also took him past club legend Steven Gerrard’s tally.

Liverpool were already assured of top spot ahead of the tie and they finished on 13 points, two ahead of Atalanta, who joined them in the next round after a 1-0 win over Ajax.

Topping the group means Klopp’s side are seeded for the draw, which takes place at 11am on Monday at the House of European Football in Nyon, Switzerland.

Now they are through, all eyes are on the potential ties in the last 16, with the first legs spread across 16 and 17 or 23 and 24 February and the second legs on 9 and 10 or 16 and 17 March.

Finishing first means Liverpool avoided tough ties against defending champions Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, Juventus or Paris Saint-Germain.

However, they could face any side which finished second in their Champions League group, meaning Atletico Madrid, Borussia Monchengladbach, Porto, Atalanta, Sevilla, Lazio, Barcelona and RB Leipzig could await them in the next round.

We have conducted a simulated draw and here were the results.

Lazio v Liverpool

Blog

According to blog Eminga , Gladbach are the most likely opponent for Liverpool at 18.38%, but our simulation pitted Klopp’s side against Italian side Lazio.

Winning the group means playing the second leg at home, so Liverpool would travel to Rome in mid-to-late February before welcoming Lazio to Anfield in March.

Atletico v Juventus

Two sides familiar to each other, having played against each other in the group stages last season. Juve drew 2-2 in Madrid before beating Diego Simeone’s side 1-0 in Turin, but both qualified for the knockout stages.

Barcelona v Chelsea

Normally a trip to Barcelona would represent a hugely difficult task, but Ronald Koeman’s side are in crisis at the moment, meaning it is Chelsea who are the seeded side.

Sevilla v Bayern Munich

Sevilla have won the Europa League four times in the last six years, but defending champions Bayern have been imperious in Europa over the last year.

Gladbach v Manchester City

The German side did extremely well to qualify from a group containing Real Madrid, Inter Milan and Shakhtar Donetsk and wouldn’t be ruled out against City, who have underachieved in Europe under Pep Guardiola.

Porto v Paris-Saint Germain

PSG clinched top spot with their 5-1 win over Istanbul Basaksehir on Wednesday and their reward could be a tie against Portugal’s Porto, who came in second place in Group C behind Man City.

Leipzig v Real Madrid

Madrid pulled out a 2-0 win over Gladbach when it mattered to top the tightest group and a tie against Leipzig, who dumped Manchester United out, would be just reward.

Atalanta v Dortmund

Liverpool know all about Atalanta, having played them twice in Group D, and the Italian wildcard side wouldn’t be daunted against heavyweights Dortmund.
